Danforth in St. Louis, Missouri, the company originally began as the Robinson-Danforth Commission Company, primarily focused on animal feed. It later became Ralston Purina in 1902, introducing its iconic red-and-white checkerboard logo that remains a hallmark of the brand today.

In 2001, the Swiss multinational Nestlé S.A. acquired Ralston Purina for approximately $10.3 billion, merging it with their existing Friskies PetCare Company to form Nestlé Purina PetCare. This merger solidified Purina's position as a dominant force in the global pet food market. Today, the brand encompasses a wide range of well-known lines, including Purina Pro Plan, Purina ONE, Dog Chow, and Fancy Feast.

Purina's manufacturing network is extensive. While headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri, the brand operates dozens of factories worldwide. In the United States alone, the company maintains over 20 manufacturing facilities, producing nearly 99% of its domestic products locally. Globally, manufacturing takes place in various regions across Europe, Latin America, and Asia to serve local markets while adhering to central quality and safety standards managed by its Swiss parent company.
