Keen is a prominent American footwear brand recognized for its innovative outdoor and lifestyle products, particularly the Newport sandal featuring its signature protective toe bumper. Founded in 2003 by Martin Keen and Rory Fuerst, the company originally operated out of Alameda, California, before relocating its headquarters to Portland, Oregon, in 2006. The brand was built on the concept of 'HybridLife,' encouraging a balance between work, play, and community giving.
Today, Keen remains a privately held, family-owned company, primarily under the ownership of co-founder Rory Fuerst and his family. Unlike many global footwear giants that rely entirely on third-party manufacturing, Keen owns and operates several of its own production facilities. These are located in Shepherdsville, Kentucky (USA), Thailand, and the Dominican Republic.
In addition to its own factories, the company partners with contract manufacturers in Cambodia, Vietnam, India, Mexico, and Romania to meet global demand. Products assembled in their US facility are often branded as 'American Built.' The brand is widely respected for its 'Keen Effect' initiative, which focuses on sustainability, eliminating harmful chemicals from the supply chain, and donating millions to disaster relief and environmental conservation.
