Xiaomi Corporation was founded in 2010 by Lei Jun and seven partners in Beijing, China. Initially starting as a software company developing the MIUI custom Android ROM, it launched its first smartphone, the Mi 1, in 2011. Since then, it has grown into one of the world's largest smartphone manufacturers and a leader in the global Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem.

While the vast majority of Xiaomi's research, development, and high-end manufacturing takes place in China, the company has established significant assembly plants in other regions to meet local demand and tax regulations. Notable manufacturing hubs include India (under the 'Make in India' initiative), Vietnam, and Indonesia.

Xiaomi is a publicly traded company listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Unlike many competitors that are subsidiaries of larger conglomerates, Xiaomi functions as its own ultimate owner. It operates through various subsidiaries and investments in over 300 companies, forming a vast 'Mi Ecosystem' that covers everything from wearable tech to home appliances.
