The drink is famous for its high alcohol content (typically 50% vol.) and its vibrant reddish-brown color, which is derived naturally from the root of the Common Tormentil (Potentilla erecta), known in German as 'Blutwurz' or blood root.

The brand was founded by the Penninger family, who established their distillery in 1905. To this day, the brand remains an independent, family-owned enterprise. The manufacturing process takes place exclusively in Waldkirchen, Bavaria, where the herbs are macerated in alcohol to extract their medicinal and aromatic properties. The brand is a symbol of Bavarian craftsmanship and regional identity, often consumed as a digestif.
