Oakley was originally founded in 1975 by James Jannard in his garage in California, USA. While the brand initially started with motorcycle grips and later became world-renowned for its performance eyewear, it has since expanded into a comprehensive lifestyle and performance apparel brand. Today, Oakley's apparel and gear are manufactured across a global supply chain, with production facilities located in multiple countries including Vietnam, China, and various locations across Southeast Asia and the Americas.

Since 2007, the Oakley brand has been part of the Italian-based eyewear conglomerate Luxottica Group. Following the 2018 merger of Essilor and Luxottica, Oakley is now under the ultimate ownership of EssilorLuxottica SA, which is headquartered in Paris, France. This transition turned Oakley into a key component of one of the world's largest optics and lifestyle portfolios, managed globally while retaining its design headquarters in Foothill Ranch, California.
