PG Tips is one of the most iconic British tea brands, originally launched in 1930 as 'Pre-Gest-Tee.' It was founded by Arthur Brooke and the Brooke Bond company, quickly becoming a staple in UK households. The brand is famous for its pioneering roles in the tea industry, such as introducing the tea bag to the UK market in the 1960s and later developing the innovative 'pyramid' tea bag designed to mimic the brewing quality of loose-leaf tea.
For decades, the brand was a central part of the Unilever portfolio. However, in 2022, Unilever completed the sale of its global tea business (ekaterra) to CVC Capital Partners. Today, the brand is managed under the LIPTON Teas and Infusions group. Despite these changes in corporate ownership, PG Tips maintains its strong heritage in Manchester, England, where it continues to be blended and manufactured at the Trafford Park factory.
The brand has also been recognized for its commitment to sustainability, becoming the first major UK tea brand to switch to fully biodegradable, plant-based tea bags. This move reflects the modern direction of the brand under its current private equity ownership, focusing on environmental responsibility while preserving its traditional British identity.
