Founded in 1974 by Mike Sinyard, the company initially focused on importing high-end Italian bicycle components before transitioning to manufacturing its own tires and eventually complete bicycles.

Manufacturing for Specialized products is primarily centered in Taiwan, leveraging the advanced carbon fiber and alloy production capabilities of the region. They maintain long-term partnerships with major manufacturers like Merida Industry Co., who also holds a minority stake in the company. Smaller batches and specialized components may be sourced from various global locations.

While Merida owns a significant minority share (approximately 49%), Specialized remains an independent entity with its headquarters and primary design operations based in Morgan Hill, California. It is widely recognized as one of the 'Big Three' bicycle brands in the United States and continues to be a leader in professional racing and cycling innovation.
