Subway was founded in 1965 by Fred DeLuca and Peter Buck in Bridgeport, Connecticut, originally named Pete's Super Submarines. The brand evolved into the global giant known today through an aggressive franchising model that began in 1974. For nearly six decades, the company remained under the private ownership of its founding families through the holding company Doctor's Associates Inc.
In a historic shift in 2024, Subway was acquired by Roark Capital, an Atlanta-based private equity firm, for approximately $9.6 billion. Roark Capital also holds significant interests in other major restaurant chains through its subsidiary Inspire Brands, although Subway is managed as a distinct entity within its portfolio.
Because Subway operates on a franchise-based model, its ingredients are sourced through a complex global supply chain. Bread dough, meats, and sauces are typically produced in large-scale regional manufacturing facilities and distribution centers, while fresh produce is often sourced from regional or local agricultural suppliers to ensure freshness at individual restaurant locations worldwide.
