Founded in 1927, the name 'REWE' is an abbreviation of 'Revisionsverband der Westkauf-Genossenschaften,' which translates to 'Audit Union for Westkauf-Cooperatives.' The company is headquartered in Cologne and is the main brand of the REWE Group, a diversified retail and tourism co-operative group. REWE offers a variety of store formats, including traditional supermarkets, hypermarkets, and convenience stores. The company is known for its own private label brands, such as 'ja!' for discount products, 'REWE Beste Wahl' for standard-priced items, 'REWE Feine Welt' for premium products, 'REWE Bio' for organic products, and 'REWE Regional' for regionally sourced goods. In 2011, REWE launched its online grocery delivery service, becoming a pioneer in online grocery shopping in Germany.
