It also played a significant role in the environmental movement through its early affiliation with conservationist John Muir. In November 2017, Time Inc. sold Sunset to Regent L.P., a Los Angeles-based private equity firm led by investor Michael Reinstein. This acquisition marked the fourth ownership change in the magazine's history, with Regent L.P. aiming to continue Sunset's legacy and expand its reach. As of October 2025, Sunset operates under the ownership of Regent L.P., maintaining its focus on Western lifestyle content and expanding its digital presence.
