DIA, short for Distribuidora Internacional de Alimentación, S.A., is a Spanish multinational company specializing in the distribution of food, household products, and personal care items. Founded in 1979, DIA opened its first store in Madrid, introducing a discount store model that emphasized cost reduction and efficient logistics. The company expanded its presence to Argentina, Portugal, and Brazil, operating under various brand names such as Minipreço in Portugal and Clarel in Spain. In 2011, DIA became an independent entity after being spun off from the French retail group Carrefour. The company has undergone several ownership changes, with the investment group LetterOne, controlled by Russian investor Mikhail Fridman, acquiring a significant stake in 2019. In 2024, DIA sold its operations in Portugal to Auchan and its Brazilian business to MAM Asset Management, focusing its efforts on the Spanish and Argentine markets.
