La Gula del Norte

La Gula del Norte is a surimi-based seafood product that serves as a substitute for traditional eel. It was introduced in the early 1980s by Angulas Aguinaga, a Spanish multinational food company founded in 1974. The company was established by three family businesses aiming to create the largest entity in the elver sector. Facing a significant decline in the eel market during the early 1980s, Angulas Aguinaga innovated by developing La Gula del Norte, which quickly gained popularity due to its high quality and ease of preparation. This product marked the beginning of modern fishing practices in Spain, including the introduction of bar-coded products in fishmongers' sections and the establishment of the first surimi factory in Europe in Irura. Over the years, Angulas Aguinaga has expanded its product range to include other seafood items and has grown into a multinational company with over 800 employees across seven work centers in Spain and Italy. The company is known for its commitment to innovation and quality, with major brands such as La Gula del Norte, Krissia, Aguinamar, Royal, and Riunione.
