Founded in 1890 on Calle Amaniel in Madrid by the Mahou family, the brewery originally operated under the name Hijos de Casimiro Mahou. The specific recipe for the "Cinco Estrellas" (Five Stars) variant was officially launched in 1969, evolving from what was previously known as Mahou Especial.

Today, the brand is part of Mahou San Miguel, the leading brewing company in Spain with a significant global footprint.
