Weather Report was an American jazz fusion band active from 1970 to 1986. Founded in New York City, the band was co-led by Austrian keyboardist Joe Zawinul and American saxophonist Wayne Shorter. Over its 16-year career, Weather Report explored various types of music, predominantly centered on jazz, but also incorporating elements of art music, ethnic music, R&B, funk, and rock. The band was known for its improvisational approach, featuring continuous improvisation by every member, and for abandoning the traditional "soloist/accompaniment" demarcation of straight-ahead jazz. Weather Report's music featured an improvisational method, similar to Miles Davis's Bitches Brew-period, but eventually shifted to a more groove-oriented approach and catchier compositions. The band was initially co-led by Zawinul and Shorter but as the 1970s progressed, Zawinul became the primary composer and creative director of the group. The band's lineup included notable musicians such as bassist Jaco Pastorius and drummer Peter Erskine. Weather Report disbanded in 1986, and its members pursued various solo projects thereafter.
