The name 'KEF' is derived from Kent Engineering and Foundry, the original site in Maidstone, Kent, England. In 1992, the Hong Kong-based Gold Peak Group acquired KEF, and GP Acoustics, a member of Gold Peak, became the owner of the company. KEF continues to develop and manufacture its products in Maidstone, England, with some models produced in other locations. The company is known for innovations such as the Uni-Q driver array and Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT), which have been implemented in their speaker designs.
