The brand was established in 1966 by brothers Manolis and Sotiris Lyrarakis in the village of Alagni, near Heraklion. The winery is renowned for its commitment to indigenous Cretan grape varieties, such as the Kotsifali used in this product, and has been instrumental in reviving several near-extinct local grapes.

The wine is produced and bottled at the Lyrarakis estate in the Peza region of Crete. This specific varietal is typically sourced from high-altitude vineyards around 500 meters above sea level, contributing to its unique spicy and red-fruit profile.
