Domači brinjevec Brkini

Domači brinjevec is a traditional Slovenian spirit made through the distillation of fermented juniper berries. This specific variety, associated with the Brkini region, is celebrated for its purity and geographical heritage. Unlike gin, which uses a grain-based spirit flavored with juniper, authentic Brinjevec is distilled directly from the berries themselves.

The production of Brinjevec in the Brkini and Karst regions dates back over 200 years. Historically, it was cherished by locals not only as a drink but as a traditional folk remedy for digestive and respiratory issues. The process is labor-intensive, requiring a significant quantity of wild juniper berries to produce a single liter of the clear, aromatic distillate.

Today, the production remains largely local and craft-focused. While large Slovenian beverage companies like Dana and Fructal produce commercial versions, many bottles labeled 'Domači' (meaning 'homemade' or 'domestic') are produced by smaller family distilleries or regional collectives within the protected geographical area of Brkini. This ensures the preservation of traditional distillation techniques, often using specialized copper stills unique to the region.
