Milka is one of the world's most recognizable chocolate brands, best known for its distinctive lilac packaging and the 'Milka Cow' mascot. The brand has its roots in Switzerland, where it was founded in 1901 by Philippe Suchard in Lörrach, Germany, originally as a product of the Suchard company. The name Milka is derived from a combination of the German words for its two primary ingredients: Milch (milk) and Kakao (cocoa).
Over more than a century, the brand has grown from a regional Swiss-German specialty into a global powerhouse. While it originated in the heart of the Alps, its manufacturing now takes place in several locations across Europe, including plants in Germany, Austria, Poland, and Bulgaria, to serve international markets. The Alpine milk theme remains central to its brand identity and marketing strategy.
Ownership of Milka has transitioned through major corporate mergers. After being part of Jacobs Suchard and later Kraft Foods, the brand is currently owned by Mondelēz International. Mondelēz is an American multinational confectionery, food, and beverage conglomerate headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. Despite American ownership, Milka maintains its European heritage and remains a leading chocolate brand in Germany and across the continent.
