Toms Åkander is a classic Danish confectionery consisting of fresh peppermint fondant discs on a base of dark chocolate. The brand 'Toms' was founded in 1924 by Danish pharmacists Hans Trojel and Victor H. Meyer. The name itself is an acronym of the founders' last names (Trojel and Meyer) with an added 'S'.
Historically, the production of Toms chocolate has been centered at their iconic factory in Ballerup, Denmark, designed by the famous architect Arne Jacobsen. However, in recent years, the company has begun a strategic consolidation, shifting some chocolate production to their facility in Nowa Sól, Poland, while maintaining sugar confectionery production in Hvidovre, Denmark.
Ownership of the brand is unique; since 1974, Toms Group has been entirely owned by the Gerda and Victor B. Strand Foundation (Toms Group Foundation). This structure ensures that the company's profits are reinvested into the business and distributed to various charitable causes, focusing on social and environmental sustainability within the cocoa supply chain.
