Blue Band is an iconic brand of margarine and spreads with a history dating back to the early 20th century. Originally developed in the Netherlands by the Van den Bergh company (one of the founding entities of Unilever), it has become a staple household name across Europe, Africa, and parts of Asia. The brand was historically synonymous with Unilever's food portfolio for nearly a century.
In 2018, as part of a strategic shift to focus on high-growth categories, Unilever sold its global spreads business to the private equity firm KKR for approximately €6.8 billion. Following this acquisition, the business was rebranded as Upfield. Today, Blue Band is managed by Upfield, which has repositioned the brand to emphasize its plant-based origins and nutritional fortification, particularly with vitamins A, D, and E.
Manufacturing of Blue Band occurs in various locations globally to serve local markets. Significant production facilities are located in the Netherlands for the European market and in Kenya for the East African market. The brand continues to evolve under Upfield's ownership, expanding its product line to include peanut butter and mayonnaise while maintaining its core identity as a versatile, vitamin-enriched spread.
