E45 is a distinguished dermatological skincare brand with a clinical heritage dating back to 1952. Originally developed by a chemist at Boots the Chemists in the United Kingdom, it was initially formulated to meet hospital needs for a gentle, soothing emollient for patients with sensitive skin. For decades, it was a staple in clinical settings before transitioning to general retail in the 1980s, eventually becoming one of the most trusted names for managing conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis.
Following its development at Boots, the brand was managed by Crookes Healthcare and later became a flagship property of the multinational consumer goods company Reckitt (formerly Reckitt Benckiser). In a significant strategic shift, Reckitt sold the E45 brand to Karo Healthcare (formerly Karo Pharma) in April 2022. Today, the brand is owned by the Swedish-based Karo Healthcare, which manages its global strategy from Stockholm. Manufacturing is conducted through a diversified network of contract facilities across Europe and other regions to maintain its specialized medical-grade standards.
