Philadelphia cream cheese is one of the world's most recognized dairy brands, though its name is famously misleading regarding its origin. Despite being named after the city in Pennsylvania, the product was actually invented in 1872 by William Lawrence in Chester, New York. The 'Philadelphia' name was adopted in 1880 as a marketing strategy because the city was then synonymous with high-quality dairy products.

Today, the brand's ownership is split geographically due to the corporate spin-off of Kraft Foods. In North America, the brand is owned and manufactured by Kraft Heinz. However, for the European market (including the product shown with multi-language labeling for the Nordic region), the brand is owned by Mondelēz International. Manufacturing for the European market is centered in several locations, with a major production facility located in Bad Fallingbostel, Germany, which supplies much of the continent.
