Jar is a prominent brand of dishwashing detergent primarily sold in Central and Eastern European markets, including Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, and Croatia. The brand was originally established in Czechoslovakia during the 1960s. Its name is an acronym derived from the last names of its creators: Janeček (the company CEO at the time) and Ranný (the product's inventor). Over decades, it became so successful that the name 'Jar' turned into a genericized trademark for dish soap in its home markets.
Today, Jar is a regional variant of the global dishwashing brand known elsewhere as Fairy (UK), Yes (Nordics), or Dreft (Benelux). It is owned by the American multinational consumer goods corporation Procter & Gamble (P&G). While the brand has deep Czech roots, modern manufacturing occurs across P&G's global network of factories, with significant production facilities located in Europe to serve the regional market. Ownership remains with Procter & Gamble, which manages the brand as part of its Home Care portfolio.
