It was initially developed by Fog Creek Software in New York City and released in 2011. In 2017, the brand was acquired by the Australian software giant Atlassian. While the brand originated in the United States, its ownership and strategic direction are now managed by Atlassian, which is headquartered in Sydney, Australia. As a digital product, it is developed and hosted primarily on servers located in the United States, though its workforce and infrastructure are global.
