Toshiba's portable storage solutions, such as the Canvio series, are integral products of a brand with a legacy dating back to 1875. The brand originated from the merger of Shibaura Seisakusho and Tokyo Denki in 1939 to form Tokyo Shibaura Electric Co., Ltd., which officially became Toshiba Corporation in 1978. As a pioneer in the industry, Toshiba was the first to market the 1.8-inch hard disk drive (HDD) in 2000 and has remained a global leader in storage technology.
While the brand is deeply rooted in Japanese engineering, its manufacturing footprint is global. Most hard drives are produced in specialized facilities in the Philippines and China to meet worldwide demand. In recent years, Toshiba has undergone significant structural changes. In December 2023, the company was delisted from the Tokyo Stock Exchange after 74 years and taken private by a consortium led by Japan Industrial Partners (JIP). This move was intended to stabilize the company and allow for a more agile management approach, focusing on core pillars like electronic devices and infrastructure as it moves into 2026 and beyond.
