The brand traces its heritage back to a distillery founded in 1886 in the state of Rio de Janeiro. It is famously marketed as the ideal base for the Caipirinha, Brazil's national cocktail, and its distinctive packaging is inspired by the iconic Sugar Loaf Mountain overlooking Guanabara Bay.

While the product is deeply rooted in Brazilian culture and production, the brand is owned and distributed internationally by the French spirits conglomerate Pernod Ricard.
