Croma is an iconic Dutch culinary brand with a history dating back to 1924, when it was introduced by De Nieuwe Margarinefabrieken in Rijswijk. Originally designed to replicate the flavor and performance of traditional beef fat used for searing meat, it became a staple in Dutch households for achieving a perfect brown crust and rich gravy. Over the decades, the product evolved from animal fats to a primarily plant-based composition, consisting of approximately 98% vegetable oils and fats.
Historically, Croma was a key part of Unilever's portfolio for many years. However, in 2018, as part of a major strategic shift, Unilever sold its global spreads division to the American investment firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts (KKR). This led to the formation of the company known as Upfield. In late 2024, Upfield underwent a significant corporate rebranding to become the Flora Food Group, reflecting its focus on plant-based food innovation. Today, Croma remains a prominent local brand in the Netherlands, produced domestically and managed under the global leadership of the Flora Food Group.
