Founded by Lennart Lajboschitz and his wife Suz, the brand was initially known as 'Zebra' before the first 'Tiger' store opened in 1995. The name 'Tiger' is a play on the Danish word 'tier', which refers to a 10-kroner coin, the flat price originally set for all items in the store.

While the brand is deeply rooted in Danish design principles—focusing on simplicity, creativity, and affordability—its manufacturing is global. Approximately 75% of its production takes place in China, supported by a specialized quality assurance team in Shanghai, with the remaining items produced in the EU and other countries like India and Taiwan.

Ownership of the brand has transitioned over the years. In 2021, the parent company, Zebra A/S, was acquired by the Danish investment firm Treville. As of 2024, the brand continues to operate as a subsidiary of Zebra A/S under the ultimate ownership of Treville, maintaining its headquarters in Copenhagen while serving markets worldwide with its quirky and ever-changing product assortment.
