The brand was founded in 1963 by Sten Åke Lindholm in Linköping, Sweden, initially as a mail-order business for car parts under the name 'BIL-TEMA'. Over the decades, Biltema transitioned from a niche automotive supplier into a comprehensive 'family store' across Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Denmark, offering over 19,000 product lines including tools, leisure goods, and household hardware.

Ownership of the brand remains private, held by the founder Sten Åke Lindholm through the Dutch-based entity Biltema BV (or Biltema Holding B.V.).
