Founded in 1933 by Francesco Illy in Trieste, Italy, illycaffè has grown from a local business into a global icon of Italian espresso culture. The brand is renowned for its signature blend of nine high-quality Arabica coffees sourced from regions across South and Central America, India, and Africa. A key innovation in illy's history is the pressurized packaging system, which uses inert gas to preserve the aroma and freshness of the beans, making the brand's silver and red cans a staple in homes and cafes worldwide.
While the primary roasting and production facilities are located in Trieste, Italy, the company has recently expanded its manufacturing footprint to include local production in key markets like the United States to optimize its supply chain and meet international demand. illycaffè remains a family-controlled company, currently led by the third generation of the Illy family. Although the family retains majority ownership through Holding Illy S.p.A., a minority stake (approximately 20%) was sold to the global private equity firm Rhône Capital in late 2020 to support its continued international expansion and upcoming IPO plans.
