Esselunga Senape Delicata is a mild mustard product marketed under the private label of Esselunga, one of Italy's most prominent supermarket chains. The brand has a storied history, having been founded in 1957 in Milan as Italy's first supermarket. The venture was a collaboration between the American businessman Nelson Rockefeller and the Italian Caprotti brothers, Bernardo, Guido, and Claudio. The name 'Esselunga' is derived from the distinctively elongated 'S' in its logo, designed by Max Huber.
Over the decades, the company transitioned to full Italian ownership. Following a series of family negotiations and corporate restructurings that concluded in 2020, the company is now 100% owned by the Caprotti family through the holding company Supermarkets Italiani S.p.A. The leadership and ultimate control rest with Marina Caprotti and her mother, Giuliana Albera Caprotti. The brand is deeply rooted in Italian retail culture, known for its high-quality private-label goods and its extensive presence across northern and central Italy.
The product is manufactured in Italy, aligning with Esselunga's strategy of offering high-quality domestic food items to its consumers. As a private label, it is distributed exclusively through Esselunga's retail network, which includes traditional supermarkets, superstores, and online shopping platforms.
