Founded in 1834 in Rügenwalde (now Darłowo, Poland) by Carl Müller, the company relocated to Bad Zwischenahn, Lower Saxony, after World War II. While originally famous for its meat-based 'Teewurst', the brand successfully pivoted toward vegetarian and vegan alternatives starting in 2014, eventually becoming the market leader in Germany for meat substitutes.

In late 2023, the family-owned company announced a major shift in ownership, with the food group Pfeifer & Langen (through its subsidiary Nature’s Richness Holding GmbH) acquiring a majority stake of 85%. This transition, finalized in early 2024, integrates Rügenwalder Mühle into a larger portfolio focused on plant-based innovation alongside brands like Endori. The product is primarily manufactured at the company's dedicated vegan and vegetarian production sites in Germany, including its facility in Goldenstedt.
