Suunto is a legendary Finnish brand founded in 1936 by Tuomas Vohlonen, a surveyor and orienteer who revolutionized navigation by inventing the liquid-filled field compass. For decades, the brand became synonymous with rugged reliability, expanding its expertise into diving instruments in 1965 and high-performance sports watches. To this day, Suunto maintains its headquarters and primary manufacturing facility in Vantaa, Finland, where many of its premium products are still handcrafted using 100% renewable energy.
While the brand's heart remains in Finland, its ownership history has seen significant global shifts. Suunto was long a part of the Finnish group Amer Sports (owner of Salomon and Wilson). In 2019, Amer Sports was acquired by a consortium led by the Chinese giant Anta Sports. However, in 2022, Suunto was sold as a separate entity to Dongguan Liesheng Electronic Technology (Liesheng), a Chinese consumer electronics firm known for its Haylou brand. Despite this Chinese ownership, Suunto continues to operate as an independent brand with its design and core production staying firmly rooted in its Finnish heritage.
