X (formerly Twitter) social media app

X, previously known as Twitter, is a major social media and microblogging platform. It was originally founded as Twitter in 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams in San Francisco, California. The platform's origin is rooted in the podcasting company Odeo before it was spun off into its own entity.

In October 2022, the company was acquired by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk for $44 billion. Under Musk's leadership, the company underwent a massive rebranding in 2023, changing its name to X and merging into X Corp. The headquarters were subsequently moved from San Francisco to Bastrop, Texas. As of early 2025, X Corp. became a subsidiary of xAI, Musk's artificial intelligence company, reflecting a strategic shift toward integrating AI technologies like the Grok model into the social networking experience. While the software is developed globally by engineers, its primary operational and legal origin remains the United States.
