MSC certified seafood

The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is an international non-profit organization that manages the world's most recognized certification and ecolabeling program for sustainable wild-capture seafood. Established in 1997, it was originally a joint initiative between the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and the multinational consumer goods company Unilever. Since 1999, it has operated as an entirely independent organization.

Products bearing the blue MSC label are not produced by a single company or in a single country; rather, the label indicates that the seafood was caught by a fishery that meets rigorous sustainability standards. These standards focus on the health of fish stocks, the impact on the marine ecosystem, and the effectiveness of the fishery's management. Once a fishery is certified, every company in the supply chain—from the boat to the supermarket—must undergo a 'Chain of Custody' certification to ensure the fish is traceable back to a sustainable source.

While the MSC is headquartered in London, United Kingdom, certified products originate from hundreds of different fisheries across all the world's oceans and are processed and sold globally. The organization is funded primarily through licensing fees paid by businesses that choose to display the blue ecolabel on their packaging.
