Fisherman's Friend is an iconic brand of strong menthol lozenges with a history dating back to 1865. The product was originally developed by James Lofthouse, a pharmacist in the port town of Fleetwood, England, to provide relief for deep-sea fishermen facing harsh conditions in the North Atlantic. What started as a liquid remedy of menthol and eucalyptus was eventually transformed into small lozenges to prevent glass bottles from breaking during rough voyages.
The brand remained a local secret for nearly a century until the mid-20th century, when Doreen Lofthouse led a massive global expansion. Today, the brand is exported to over 100 countries. Despite its international reach, the company has maintained a strong commitment to its roots; all production still takes place in Fleetwood, Lancashire. The brand remains entirely family-owned, managed by the Lofthouse family through a private company and a family foundation, making it one of the few global confectionery brands to resist acquisition by larger conglomerates.
