Citalopram (Celexa) antidepressant

Citalopram is a widely prescribed antidepressant belonging to the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) class. Originally synthesized in 1972 by chemist Klaus Bøgesø and his team at the Danish pharmaceutical company H. Lundbeck A/S, the drug underwent fifteen years of clinical development before being launched in Denmark in 1989 under the brand name Cipramil. It gained significant global traction, eventually becoming a cornerstone of Lundbeck's international expansion and one of the most prescribed antidepressants in the world.

In the United States, citalopram was licensed to Forest Laboratories and marketed under the brand name Celexa, receiving FDA approval in 1998. Following the expiration of the original molecule patent in 2003, the market opened to generic manufacturers, leading to widespread production across various global pharmaceutical sites. Today, while the original brand owner remains Lundbeck, the medication is manufactured in numerous countries by a variety of generic drug producers, including Teva, Sandoz, and Viatris, to meet global healthcare demands.

Ownership of the original brand and molecule remains with H. Lundbeck A/S, a company uniquely structured as it is approximately 70% owned by the Lundbeck Foundation. This foundation-led model focuses on long-term research into brain diseases. While Lundbeck continues to oversee the brand's legacy and its successor molecules like escitalopram, the widespread availability of citalopram as a generic pharmaceutical means that its manufacturing is now decentralized across international borders.
