Teebutter

Teebutter (Tea Butter) is a premium grade of butter in Austria and parts of Central Europe, characterized by its high quality and specific production standards. The name 'Teebutter' originates from a 19th-century Austrian tradition where high-quality butter was specifically produced for or marketed as a complement to English-style afternoon tea, which was fashionable among the aristocracy. One popular theory suggests the name derived from an abbreviation used by the Archduke of Teschen's dairy (Teschner Erzherzögliche Butter), though linguistic experts often lean toward the association with tea-drinking culture.

Today, 'Teebutter' is a regulated quality grade in Austria (Grade I), ensuring the product is made from fresh cream and meets strict fat and water content requirements. It is manufactured by several major Austrian dairies, most notably Schärdinger (owned by Berglandmilch) and NÖM. As a generic quality designation, it is also sold under various private labels like Spar and Billa, but the production remains localized within Austria using Austrian alpine milk.
