J.Crew is a prominent American multi-brand retailer that has become an icon of preppy, timeless style. Founded in 1947 by Mitchell Cinader and Saul Charles as Popular Merchandise, Inc., it originally operated as a door-to-door sales business for women's apparel. The brand underwent a significant transformation in 1983 when it was renamed J.Crew and launched its first catalog, eventually opening its first physical retail store in New York City's South Street Seaport in 1989.

Today, J.Crew's manufacturing is global, with products sourced from a diverse network of partner factories in countries such as China, Vietnam, India, and Sri Lanka, while a very limited selection of items remains made in the USA. Following a financial restructuring and emergence from Chapter 11 bankruptcy in late 2020, the company transitioned from private equity ownership to being primarily controlled by its former creditors. As of 2026, the brand continues to operate as a private entity with major backing from investment firms focused on its long-term operational stability and digital expansion.
