Extra is a globally recognized brand of sugar-free chewing gum that was first introduced to the United States market in 1984. It gained fame for being the first sugar-free gum that did not use saccharin, opting instead for aspartame (NutraSweet), which offered a cleaner taste profile. Within five years of its launch, it became the top-selling sugar-free gum in the U.S. and eventually expanded its presence to over 180 countries.
The brand was originally developed by the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company, a historic confectionery giant based in Chicago, Illinois. In 2008, the Wrigley Company was acquired by Mars, Incorporated, a deal that merged two of the world's most prominent candy manufacturers. Today, the brand is managed under the Mars Wrigley Confectionery segment, which oversees a massive portfolio of snacks and treats. While Mars Wrigley operates 21 production facilities across 14 countries, the Sweet Watermelon variant sold in North America is primarily manufactured in the United States.
