Pétrole Hahn is an iconic hair care brand with roots dating back to 1885 when Charles Hahn, a Swiss pharmacist, developed a hair lotion formulated with petroleum, which was then believed to have scalp-toning properties. The brand gained significant popularity in France after the druggist François Vibert acquired the rights and registered the trademark in 1896. Throughout the 20th century, Pétrole Hahn became a household name for men's grooming in France and Europe.
After being owned by international corporations like Richardson-Vicks and later Procter & Gamble, the brand was sold in 1998 to the French company Eugène Perma. Under Eugène Perma, production was consolidated in Reims, France, reinforcing its identity as a French-made product. In 2023, the brand underwent another ownership change when it was acquired by Naturopera, a French company specializing in natural and eco-friendly consumer goods. Today, Pétrole Hahn products are primarily manufactured in France, continuing their heritage of specialized hair treatments and daily shampoos.
