Smith's Chips, often referred to as 'the People’s Chip' in Australia, has a rich history that began in the United Kingdom in 1920. Founded by Frank Smith and Jim Viney in London, the brand famously pioneered the inclusion of a small blue sachet of salt inside its greaseproof paper bags. Following success in the UK, Frank Smith expanded the business to Australia in 1931, setting up a manufacturing facility in Surry Hills, Sydney. Over the decades, the Australian arm of the company became an iconic household name, introducing the nation's first flavored chips, such as Chicken, in 1961.

Today, Smith's is a key brand within the global portfolio of PepsiCo. After a series of ownership changes involving United Biscuits, the brand was ultimately acquired by PepsiCo in 1998. In the Australian market, the brand is managed by The Smith's Snackfood Company, which is a subsidiary of PepsiCo. The chips continue to be manufactured primarily within Australia at facilities such as Regency Park in South Australia and Tingalpa in Queensland, using potatoes sourced from local Australian farmers.
