Vegemite yeast extract spread

Vegemite is an iconic Australian savory spread made from leftover brewers' yeast extract with various vegetable and spice additives. It was developed by Dr. Cyril P. Callister in Melbourne in 1922 as a local alternative to the British spread Marmite. For decades, the brand was associated with multinational interests, most notably Kraft Foods, which became Mondelez International.

In a landmark deal in 2017, the Australian company Bega Cheese Limited (now Bega Group) purchased the brand from Mondelez International, effectively returning Vegemite to Australian ownership. Today, the product is primarily manufactured at its historic factory in Port Melbourne, Victoria. It remains a staple of Australian culture and is celebrated for its high B-vitamin content and unique, salty flavor profile.
