Dole pineapple tidbits are a globally recognized canned fruit product with a legacy dating back to the late 19th century. The brand was founded by James Dole, known as the 'Pineapple King,' who established the Hawaiian Pineapple Company in 1901. While the brand's origins are deeply rooted in Hawaii, the production of canned pineapples moved significantly to Southeast Asia in the mid-20th century due to rising costs in the United States.
Today, Dole's canned pineapple products are primarily manufactured in the Philippines and Thailand, where the company operates extensive plantations and state-of-the-art processing facilities. Specifically, the Dolefil operation in the Philippines is one of the world's largest integrated pineapple sites.
Ownership of the Dole brand is split between two major entities following a 2013 divestiture. The fresh produce business is managed by Dole plc, an Irish-American multinational headquartered in Dublin. However, the packaged foods division (which includes these pineapple tidbits) is owned by the Japanese conglomerate ITOCHU Corporation through its subsidiary, Dole Asia Holdings, headquartered in Singapore. This structure ensures that while the brand maintains its historical American identity, its global supply chain and corporate governance are centered in Asia and Europe.
