Founded by Sam Foster in Leominster, Massachusetts, the company revolutionized the eyewear industry in 1929 by selling the first mass-produced sunglasses on the Atlantic City Boardwalk. This move transformed sunglasses from a medical necessity into a global fashion staple. The brand became a cultural phenomenon in the 1960s and 70s with its famous 'Who's that behind those Foster Grants?' advertising campaign, which featured numerous Hollywood celebrities.

While the brand originated in the United States and maintained significant domestic manufacturing for decades, production has shifted globally. Today, Foster Grant products and accessories are manufactured in various international locations, including facilities in Asia and Africa, to serve a worldwide market.

In terms of ownership, the brand is currently managed by FGX International, a subsidiary of the global eyewear conglomerate EssilorLuxottica.
