Uncle Tobys is a quintessentially Australian brand with a legacy dating back to the late 19th century. The story of the brand began in 1861 when brothers Leonard and George Parsons established their oat business, but the specific 'Uncle Tobys' trademark was first registered in 1893 by Clifford Love & Co. in Sydney. For generations, the brand has been a staple in Australian pantries, known for its red packaging and association with health, vitality, and elite sports like swimming and the Ironman series.
While the brand maintains a strong local identity, its ownership has transitioned through several major corporate hands. In 1992, it was acquired by Goodman Fielder, and in 2006, it was sold to Cereal Partners Worldwide, which is a global joint venture between the Swiss giant Nestlé and the American company General Mills. Despite this international ownership, Uncle Tobys remains deeply rooted in Australia; the vast majority of its products are manufactured at its dedicated factory in Wahgunyah, Victoria, using oats sourced from local farmers in the surrounding Riverina region.
