Founded in 1909 by American retail visionary Harry Gordon Selfridge, the iconic department store has become a cornerstone of British luxury retail. Originally established as a single flagship on London's Oxford Street, it redefined the shopping experience by introducing theatrical displays and social spaces, famously declaring that 'everyone is welcome.' The brand's products, including its private label food, fashion, and home goods, are sourced and manufactured in multiple countries globally, reflecting its international luxury positioning.
Ownership of the brand has shifted significantly over the decades. After being owned by various groups including the Sears Group and the Weston family, Selfridges was acquired in 2021 by a joint venture between the Thai conglomerate Central Group and the Austrian firm Signa Holding. Following the financial restructuring of Signa in late 2023 and 2024, the ownership structure evolved. As of 2026, the brand is primarily controlled by Thailand's Central Group (60%) in partnership with the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (40%), which acquired Signa's previous stake. The company continues to operate its flagship London store alongside locations in Manchester and Birmingham.
