King Oscar is a premium seafood brand with a legacy dating back to 1873 in Stavanger, Norway. The brand was officially established in 1902 when King Oscar II of Norway and Sweden granted the Christian Bjelland Company special royal permission to use his name and likeness on their sardine labels. This royal endorsement helped the brand become a global leader in the canned seafood industry, particularly known for its high-quality brisling sardines.

While the brand's roots are firmly planted in Norwegian tradition, its manufacturing operations have evolved. In 2008, the central production of sardines was moved from Norway to a state-of-the-art facility in Gniewino, Poland, to maintain traditional methods like wood-smoking while meeting global demand. Today, King Oscar is owned by the Thai Union Group, a global seafood powerhouse based in Thailand, which acquired the brand in 2014 to expand its portfolio of premium shelf-stable seafood products.
