Penfield is a heritage American outdoor brand established in 1975 in Hudson, Massachusetts, by Harvey Gross. Originally founded to provide durable, high-quality insulated outerwear for the harsh New England climate, the brand gained international fame in the 1980s for its puffer jackets, fleeces, and down-filled garments. Its design philosophy traditionally blends technical performance with an "Ivy League" aesthetic, making it a staple in both outdoor adventure and urban streetwear.

Historically, Penfield operated its own factory in an old textile mill in Hudson, but as the brand expanded globally, manufacturing moved to various international locations to meet demand. In January 2021, Penfield was acquired by Brand Machine Group (BMG), a global licensing and brand management specialist based in the United Kingdom. Under BMG's ownership, Penfield continues to operate as an international label, focusing on functional outdoor styles and high-profile fashion collaborations.
