The product originated in the United Kingdom, evolving from earlier chocolate egg designs into the specific 'Creme Egg' brand introduced in 1971. It consists of a thick milk chocolate shell containing a sweet fondant filling that mimics the appearance of a real egg's albumen and yolk.

While the brand is deeply rooted in British heritage, its manufacturing and ownership have expanded globally. The primary production hub remains the Bournville factory in Birmingham, England, often referred to as the heart of Cadbury. However, to meet regional demand, versions of the egg are produced in other locations, including Toronto, Canada, and by licensed manufacturers in other territories.

Ownership of the brand has transitioned from its original Quaker family roots to modern corporate structures. After a high-profile acquisition in 2010, the brand became part of the Kraft Foods portfolio, which later spun off its snack division into Mondelez International. Today, Mondelez International owns the brand worldwide, except in the United States, where the rights to manufacture Cadbury chocolate are licensed to The Hershey Company.
